A clean cage is a comfortable cage. A quick daily rinse and a proper regular clean prevent most irritation and odour.

Cleaning isn't the glamorous part of chastity, but it's what makes longer wear possible. Here's a routine that works, whether you unlock every day or wear your cage for longer.

What you'll need

  • Warm water and mild, unscented soap
  • A soft toothbrush or small bottle brush kept just for your cage
  • A small squeeze bottle for rinsing while locked
  • A clean, lint-free towel
  • Toy cleaner (optional)

Daily: cleaning while it's on

If you're wearing your cage for a full day or longer, rinse it in the shower every day:

  1. Rinse with warm water, directing the flow through the holes and opening.
  2. Wash the skin around the ring and the outside of the cage with mild soap.
  3. Use the squeeze bottle to flush warm water inside the cage, then keep rinsing until the soap has gone.
  4. Dry thoroughly (see below).

Cages with plenty of holes, like our rounded cage sets, are easier to rinse while worn. After using the bathroom, a quick rinse or a pat dry helps keep things fresh between showers.

Every day or two: a proper clean

Take the cage off regularly to clean both it and yourself properly. While you're building up wear time, that means at least once a day; experienced wearers often unlock every day or two.

  1. Unlock and remove the cage, ring and any insert.
  2. Wash each part in warm, soapy water, using your brush inside the cage and around the lock.
  3. Rinse well. Leftover soap can irritate skin.
  4. Wash yourself too, and check for redness, rubbing or marks.
  5. Let everything dry fully before you put it back on.

This is also a good moment to give your skin a short break. Our wear time guide explains why breaks matter.

Weekly: a deeper clean

  • Soak the parts in warm soapy water for a few minutes, then scrub gently.
  • Rinse the lock and keyhole, shake out the water and let them dry so the lock doesn't stiffen.
  • Wash any harness or strap following its care label and let it dry fully.
  • Check everything for scratches, cracks or rough edges.

Drying properly

Trapped moisture is behind most irritation, chafing and odour. Pat dry with a clean towel, then let the cage air-dry completely before storing it or putting it back on. If you're locked, a hairdryer on its cool setting, held at a distance, can help dry inside. Avoid hot air on resin and plastic, as heat can warp them.

Cleaning by material

  • Metal: the easiest. Warm soapy water is enough day to day, and toy cleaner is fine too. Dry well so the lock and hinges stay smooth. The Mirror Steel Flat Chastity Cage has a removable silicone insert: take it out and wash it separately.
  • Plastic: warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid anything abrasive, and replace the cage once it scratches or turns cloudy, as scratches can harbour bacteria.
  • Resin: treat it gently. Warm water and mild soap only, no very hot water, no harsh chemicals and no dishwasher. The Blåhaj Chastity Cage, for example, just needs a rinse with warm water and mild soap, then drying fully. Check resin regularly for chips or cracks.
  • Silicone parts: warm soapy water, then dry. Avoid silicone-based lube on silicone, as it can damage the surface.

Choosing a material? Our metal vs resin vs plastic guide compares how easy each is to look after.

What not to use

  • Bleach, strong disinfectants or household cleaning sprays
  • Alcohol on resin or plastic, which can cause cracking or clouding
  • Scented soaps or shower gels, which can irritate sensitive skin
  • Scourers or abrasive pads
  • Boiling water, the dishwasher or hot air on resin and plastic

Storing your cage

Once it's completely dry, store your cage in a clean pouch or box, away from other toys so it doesn't get scratched. Keep the keys together, with a spare set somewhere separate. New to chastity? Start with Chastity for Beginners.

Every order is shipped in plain, discreet packaging.

Safety: clean and dry your cage regularly, and take it off at least every day or two to wash properly and check your skin. If you notice redness, a rash, sores or an unusual smell that doesn't clear with cleaning, take a break, and speak to a doctor or sexual health clinic if it doesn't settle.
