Wand Vibrators: What to Look For
Power, speeds, battery life, waterproofing and head size: how to choose a wand vibrator you'll love.
A good wand is the most versatile toy you can own. Power, control and comfort in the hand matter far more than gimmicks.
Wand vibrators have been a bedside favourite for decades, and for good reason. A broad, rumbly head delivers external stimulation that's easy to enjoy, easy to share and easy to use however you like. But wands vary a lot. Here's what to look at before you choose one.
Power and speeds
Power is what makes a wand a wand. A strong motor gives deep, rumbly vibrations rather than a light buzz. But more isn't always better: what you really want is range, so you can start gently and build up.
- Speeds set the intensity, from soft to strong.
- Patterns add pulses, waves and escalations for variety.
- Simple controls matter more than a long list of modes. You want to find your favourite setting without fumbling.
The Wand keeps things simple with five patterns and three speeds. If you like plenty to play with, the Compact Rechargeable Wand offers 20 patterns and eight intensity levels.
Rechargeable or corded?
Classic wands were plugged into the wall. Corded models never run flat, but they tie you to a socket and the cable gets in the way. Rechargeable wands are now the norm: no cable, no batteries to buy, and you can use them anywhere.
When comparing rechargeable wands, check the run time. The Wand and The Wand 2 each give up to 1.5 hours of use, while the Compact Wand runs for up to 3 hours, depending on the settings you use. Fully charge your wand before its first use and avoid leaving it flat for long periods.
Waterproofing
Water ratings tell you how much water a toy can handle. Look for an IPX number in the description:
- Water-resistant ratings, like the IPX6 on The Wand and The Wand 2, mean the toy is protected against splashes and jets of water, so it's easy to wipe and rinse clean.
- Fully waterproof ratings (usually IPX7 or higher) mean the toy can be submerged, so it can come in the bath.
If a toy isn't marked as submersible, keep it out of the bath and away from running water at the charging point.
Head size and texture
A larger head spreads vibration over a wider area, which many people find more comfortable and less ticklish. A smaller head is more focused and pinpoint. A soft silicone head, like the body-safe silicone exterior on The Wand and The Wand 2, feels smooth against the skin and is easy to clean. A flexible neck helps the head follow your body's curves.
Size overall matters too. Full-size wands feel substantial and powerful, while a compact wand is easier to hold for longer, travel with and tuck away in a drawer.
Noise
Powerful motors can be noticeable, especially on higher settings. If you share walls or a home, try lower speeds, use it under a duvet or keep some music on. Lower settings are usually noticeably quieter, and a good wand often feels best on those settings anyway.
Solo and couples use
Wands are brilliant on your own: just find a comfortable position and experiment with settings and pressure. They're just as good with a partner. Hold it for them, let them guide your hand, or keep it between you for extra sensation together. Because wands are for external use, they're easy to bring into almost any kind of play.
Want something hands-free for two? The Wearable Clitoral Vibrator Harness has nine vibration modes with app and remote control, so a partner can take charge of the settings.
Cleaning and care
- Clean the head before and after use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner.
- Keep the charging point dry and never submerge a toy that isn't rated for it.
- Dry fully before storing it in a pouch or drawer, away from other toys.
- Charge regularly, even when you're not using it much.
